Historic Castine

On Monday, we motored our way to Castine under sunny hot skies, dead calm, and with temperatures again reaching record highs in the 90s. The "Fascination" lucked out, and scooped up a short sail to Castine when breezes picked up in the early afternoon to 15 knots out of the Southwest. The fleet tied up to the town dock in the shadow of the Maine Merchant Marine Academy's training freighter.

Quaint and pretty garden overlooking the bay

The crews explored the historic town's numerous forts, historic sites, picturesque gardens, and Victorian architecture. In the evening, we enjoyed a club sponsored lobster dinner at Dennett's Wharf overlooking the Bagaduce River.

The only blemish on this otherwise fine day was the discovery that the "Day Star's" dinghy had been lost or stolen. Given the Bagaduce River's current added to the tidal currents and together they flowed at 3 knots, the dinghy seemed hopelessly lost. But things were not quite as bad as they seemed, and this story concludes with a happy ending. You'll find out about it in this trip report's chapter describing the return to Camden!
