"Oh Lord, thy sea is so great and my ship is so small..."
Ancient Mariner's Prayer
Julie and Stu Conway sailed "STAMPEDE" around the world from September 28, 1998, to April 24, 2001. On February 28, 2004, forty-five club members and guests listened with rapt attention to their story.
Stu and Julie Conway have been members of the Sailing Club for 2 or 3 years now. They brought with them a wealth of experience born of their 31-month odyssey. Commodore Dave Steward coaxed the seasoned pair into presenting the stories and sights of their journey. Club members and guests sat intently through their hour long presentation. In truth...their presentation style and pace was such that the hour passed by almost too quickly.
They broke their story into segments, just as they
had partititioned their voyage. We heard stories of the locking through
the Panama Canal with the biggest raft of boats ever. They told us
about the South Pacific and the idyllic remote islands. There was
an odd encounter with a freighter. Stu wore pantaloons (see photos
above ) he had procured in Cairo. The story of the merchant following
him around town until he found just the right ones was very amusing. Their
photos took everyone to at least one place they had never imagined. There
were questions about pirates in Indonesia, advance preparations, and lessons
learned. Did you know that eggs can be left unrefrigerated for up
to 3 weeks? What is most clear from their tale is that for some, dreams
can come true. Julie and Stu Conway were changed by their experiences
and the Sailing Club is most fortunate to count them among our members.
The Sailing Club thanks Julie and Stu for sharing their memories with us. The evening also gave us the opportunity to welcome some new members as well as offer space in our 2004 Tri-Events Forum , sell some custom caps and clothes, and plan with our friends how we will enjoy this season in the Sailing Club. Many thanks to Stu and Julie.
